Customs / Tax-free - Montpellier Airport

+A -A

On returning to or arriving in France, do not overlook the customs formalities.

PURCHASING IN MEMBER STATES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

During your trip, if you purchase goods for your personal use, you will not have to fill out a declaration or pay duties and taxes when leaving or returning to France.

You pay the value added tax (VAT) directly in the country where you purchase the goods and at the local rate in that country.

If you buy alcoholic beverages and tobacco, Community legislation provides indicative thresholds for purchases by individuals.

Beyond these thresholds, and depending on other criteria, you will have to pay the various duties and taxes applicable in France.

PURCHASING IN NON-MEMBER COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

When you arrive in France, customs and tax duties for quantities and values are applicable according to the categories of goods you are carrying, if you have purchased the items:

  • In a non-member country of the European Union (third countries),
  • In an area outside the Community customs territory (i.e. the overseas territories of French Polynesia, St-Pierre-and-Miquelon, Wallis-and-Futuna or in the case of New Caledonia and Saint-Barthelemy, for example),
  • In a third tax zone (i.e. the overseas departments of Guyana, Réunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique or in the case of Saint-Martin, the Channel Islands or the Canary Islands, for example).

More information about customs formalities on arrival in France.

OBLIGATION TO DECLARE SUMS AND VALUES

In France, sums of money, securities or values exceeding the threshold of 10 000 € must be declared to the customs administration. Some goods remain prohibited or subject to special formalities.

See the information about the obligation to declare sums of money and values.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT CUSTOMS AND TAX-FREE

Currently, the Customs Service is conducting a major awareness campaign to inform passengers about their rights and obligations: tobacco, counterfeit goods, alcohols, currency etc.  Various information services are thus available to travellers:

> Customs website http://www.douane.gouv.fr/, notably the section on "Travel".

> Smartphone application available on IPhone, IPad, Android and Blackberry.

> Call Centre  "Customs Service Information" by calling 09 70 27 70 92 from France, by calling 33 172 40 78 50 from abroad.

> A Customs Service at Montpellier Airport est is open every day from 5.30am to 11pm for your tax exemption formalities.

  • When you are arriving to Montpellier Airport : go to the Terminal Information Desk.
  • When you are leaving from Montpellier Airport, if you are travelling (including transit) to a country located outside of the European Union (for example Morocco, Algeria, United States of America, etc. or even Suisse, Norway, Iceland or any of the DOM TOM)  : go to the Terminal Information Desk.
Tax exemption may apply only to goods placed in the hold; for hand baggage the formalities are dealt with in the transit airport, except for direct departures from Montpellier to a third country (non-EU).
