Copenhagen cosmopolitan and trendy

More information

The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is nonetheless a city on a human scale, to enjoy exploring on foot or by bike. A subtle blend of contemporary and old, this "trendy city" is also a new rendezvous for food lovers.

Located on the eastern shore of the island of Zealand, and the smaller island of Amager, Copenhagen lies opposite the Swedish cities of Malmö and Landskrona. Opened in 2000, the Øresund Bridge connects Copenhagen to the south of Sweden in just 45 minutes by car and 35 minutes by train.

Transformed into a temple of design and ecology, the city has found the perfect harmony between the Royal Christiansborg style and the latest architectural innovations, such as the Henning Larsen Opera or the "Black Diamond" with its black granite facades, home to the Royal Library. Latest creation: the huge, blue cube-shaped Concert Hall, designed by Jean Nouvel.

Dotted with outdoor cafes and pedestrian streets, criss-crossed by canals, Copenhagen invites you to wander, by bike or on foot. Nyhaven harbour with its colourful facades is the ideal place to start your visit, because this is where the history of the city began. Dug in 1669 to facilitate the transport of goods, the ancient port of herring fishermen now welcomes yachts and sailboats.

Further along the harbour, the stunning architecture of the new Royal Theatre stands among the old eighteenth century warehouses, while Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish royal family, opens onto a large square where everyday at noon, the changing of the guards takes place, with all the military tradition of the one in London.

Known for its furniture dealers and Museum of Art and Design, exhibiting the greatest works of Danish designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, Copenhagen is also famous for its statue of the Little Mermaid, from the tale by Hans Christian Andersen, located at the entrance of the port.

In just a few years, Copenhagen has also become the new mecca of gastronomy, promoting the organic trend and encouraging the rise of "healthy eating". Michelin distributed no fewer than 14 stars to the Danish capital in its 2012 edition, with two restaurants, Noma and Geranium, listed among the top 50 restaurants in the world!
