From Montpellier to Berlin: “Wings of Desire"
More than 30 Years After Its Fall, the Berlin Wall Still Fascinates. Even though the imposing 43 km barrier has been almost completely demolished, the most significant remnant can be found along Mühlenstrasse. Here, 120 artists have “decorated” a 1.3 km stretch, now known as the “East Side Gallery.” It’s a visual shock!
Throughout the city, museums and memorials also bear witness to the Cold War. The checkpoint at Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous crossing point between the two parts of Berlin, has been recreated, complete with fake soldiers on guard! Like a healed wound, the monumental Brandenburg Gate, crowned with its quadriga, has regained its former glory...
A City Best Seen from Above
From up high, the landmarks sparkle along Unter den Linden, Berlin’s “Champs-Élysées.” From churches to baroque and neoclassical buildings, the avenue stretches to the cathedral with its monumental dome and further to Alexanderplatz, once the showcase of former East Germany. At its center, the eye is drawn to the 1960s-style TV tower (368 meters) topped with a giant sphere… From up there, Berlin reveals itself, eight times larger than Paris! At this point, don’t you want to book your flight from Montpellier?
The playground of architects
With such a vast territory, builders have had a field day! On Kurfürstendamm, a long shopping street in West Berlin, the “hollow tooth” serves as a landmark. This war-damaged tower (left in its original state) is flanked by a modern tower. This blend of contemporary architecture and history has continued with Herculean reconstruction efforts following Berlin’s reunification. From Pei to Jean Nouvel, the most famous architects have erected bold buildings on the no-man’s-land remnants of the wall. By topping the Reichstag (Parliament) with a transparent dome, Norman Foster (the architect of the Millau Viaduct) brought lightness to this heavy neobaroque building. Further along, Potsdamer Platz is now a shopping center protected by a gigantic glass canopy. The same audacity can be seen in the embassy district bordering Tiergarten park. Strolling through this area feels like visiting a world expo!
Celebrating creativity
Former East Berlin serves as a playground for whimsical creators. It began with the Hackescher Markt district in the 1990s, whose ambiance hovers between Paris’s Latin Quarter and Le Marais. The renovated Neo-Renaissance buildings now house art galleries, showrooms, and trendy bars. Pushed further by luxury boutiques, artists moved on to Prenzlauer Berg. This popular district with shaded avenues has forged a new soul through creative renovations. You’ll now find crowds at the Schultheiss brewery turned cultural complex and in organic restaurants. Prefer something less “bohemian”? Head to Kreuzberg, once a hippie haven in the 1970s. Its quirky vibe attracts night owls, while on the other side of the Spree River, party-goers flock to the “underground” district of Friedrichshain, with its industrial spaces converted into techno clubs...
